BLOOD BIOMARKERS FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE 30 October 2006 Following the publication today of research undertaken by the team led by Professor Simon Lovestone at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London and Proteome Sciences plc in the peer reviewed journal Brain (2006) entitled: 'Proteome-based plasma biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease' the Alzheimer's Research Trust, which part funded the research has issued a press release dated 30th October, 2006: 'Blood Test Breakthrough Causes Excitement in Alzheimer's Research Community' which can be accessed through the direct link on our website (www.proteomics.com). This article confirms the identification of two proteins in blood as markers for Alzheimer's disease from a study of 500 patients in the UK. Proteome Sciences plc were co-authors of the research published in Brain. To expand and identify further potential diagnostic markers, Proteome Sciences has continued to work with Professor Lovestone's team to complete a ProteoSHOP® study comparing 50 disease versus 50 control patients using a combination of three different proteomics approaches. This has revealed 36 differentially expressed proteins in blood, ten of which were confirmed by more than one method. These are being evaluated for their utility in diagnosing and monitoring disease progression. Proteome Sciences retains commercial rights for the use of these markers in Alzheimer's.
